Mushroom 101: What Are Adaptogens?

Adaptogen is a term that was coined during the Cold War, when a Russian scientist named Nikolai Lazarev wanted to learn the secrets to better vitality for athletes, soldiers, and others. Adaptogenic substances refer to natural substances or supplements that reduce stress on the body.

Confirming what some cultures have known for millennia, much of the research on adaptogens has focused on the wellness properties of several kinds of mushrooms, including cordyceps, chaga, lion’s mane, reishi, maitake, shiitake and turkey tail. These are the types of mushrooms we use in our CBD mushroom products, such as our CBD mushroom oil tinctures and CBD gummies with mushrooms.

Mushroom 101: What Are Nootropics?

Nootropics are supplements that improve cognitive function. Some mushrooms have been thought to positively affect the neurological system. This can happen in a number of ways, including stimulating the repair and growth of new nervous system cells, fighting inflammation in brain cells, maximizing the usage of oxygen in brain and nervous tissue, and supporting mood and sleep. Lion’s mane is, perhaps, the mushroom most associated with nootropic benefits. Cordyceps and chaga are thought to have nootropic effects as well.

MUSHROOM HEALTH: THE HISTORY OF MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS

The history of mushrooms being used for medicinal purposes (medicinal mushrooms) stretches all the way back to ancient China, nearly 5,000 years ago. Reishi mushrooms were referred to as “the mushroom of immortality,” and were given exclusively to Chinese emperors and the royal families. Cordyceps, lion’s mane and other types of mushrooms were also used in ancient Chinese medicine for their various wellness benefits.

Maitake means “dancing mushroom” in Japanese, in reference to the dance of joy people would make when they found these valuable mushrooms in feudal Japan.

Prince Vladimir Monomakh II of medieval Russia reportedly took chaga mushrooms to cure his lip cancer. In fact, the name “chaga” comes from the Slavic word for “lip” (gaga).

All over the world, these wonderful fungi were revered for their wellness benefits. It should be noted that, while these mushrooms have been used for medicinal purposes throughout human history, we cannot make any medical claims about them, by law. No content on this site should be construed as medical advice.

THE BENEFITS OF MUSHROOMS: TYPES OF ADAPTOGENIC AND NOOTROPIC FUNGI

At CBDfx, we use several different kinds of mushrooms for our CBD mushroom products, each with its own unique benefits and characteristics. Like our CBD, all of the mushrooms we use in our products are organically grown.

CORDYCEPS

Cordyceps sinensis (or simply, cordyceps) is a type of fungus that has been studied for its potential to help reduce stress on the body, increasing resistance to stress-inducing activity. Cordyceps is often taken for an energy boost (some even take it for libido). This makes it great for athletes and, really, anyone looking to ease stress-related wear and tear on the body. Cordyceps is also a great source for vitamin B1, B2, B12 and K!

CHAGA

Chaga mushrooms are rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B complex, vitamin D, potassium, and more. As mentioned earlier, Inonotus obliquus gets its nickname, chaga, from a medieval Russian prince, who took it to treat his lip (gaga) cancer. We certainly don’t make any claims about the use of chaga for such a serious disease, but we can tell you that the chaga mushroom has been taken for centuries to help with immunity and overall health.

LION’S MANE

Hericium erinaceus gets its nickname, lion’s mane, from its shaggy outgrowth of spines. This mushroom has also traditionally been taken for its adaptogenic benefits, helping the body to regulate stress and inflammation. This mushroom is also believed to have positive nootropic effects on the neurological system. Lion’s mane mushrooms are a great source of proteins, healthy carbohydrates, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and more.

mushroom hub star player reishi

REISHI

Ganoderma lucidum, or reishi, is commonly used for adaptogenic benefits, as well. This mushroom is believed to help support the adrenal glands, which in turn release cortisol to help the body respond to stress. Reishi mushrooms are also a great source for vitamins (especially vitamin D), minerals, dietary fiber, and amino acids.

MAITAKE

We’ve already mentioned why Grifola frondosa has been called the “dancing mushroom” (maitake). The reason this mushroom was considered so valuable in feudal Japan is because of its positive immunity and wellness benefits. Among the nutrients in this tasty mushroom are vitamins B and C, copper and other minerals, potassium, fiber, amino acids, beta-glucans, and healthful antioxidants.

mushroom hub star player turkeytail

TURKEY TAIL (A.K.A. TURKEYTAIL)

Trametes versicolor gets the name “turkey tail” from its colorful, fan-like structure. This mushroom is well known for its immune properties. Turkey tail contains two different polysaccharopeptides, which have powerful immune benefits. This mushroom is also packed with antioxidants and other beneficial compounds, plus vitamins B3 and D!

mushroom hub star player shitake

SHIITAKE

Lentinula edodes is one of the most popular mushrooms in the world! This brown-capped shroom hails from East Asia and is packed with several essential vitamins and minerals. Shiitake has long been prized for its immune, heart health, antibacterial, adaptogenic, and nootropic benefits, making it a wonderful all-around wellness supplement.

CBD MUSHROOMS: LET’S NOT FORGET THE CBD!

We’ve talked long and hard about the health benefits of mushrooms, but let’s not forget the other powerful wellness ingredient in our CBD mushrooms: CBD! CBD (or cannabidiol) is one of a group of chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant called cannabinoids. There are over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, as well as healthful terpenes and flavonoids.

CBD and other cannabinoids, such as CBGCBN, and CBC, bring a number of wellness benefits due to their interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system. This system helps keep many of the body’s other systems and organs, most notably the central and peripheral nervous systems, in balance (or homeostasis). This interaction helps to regulate such crucial functions as sleep, mood, memory, stress, pain, appetite, and much more. Because of CBD’s positive interaction with the ECS, it has become one of the most popular wellness products on the market.

KNOW YOUR CANNABIS: MARIJUANA, HEMP, CBD AND THC

There are two types of cannabis: marijuana and hemp. Marijuana refers to cannabis with high amounts of THC, the cannabinoid that gets you high. Hemp contains only low and non-intoxicating traces of THC (less than 0.3%) and is the type of cannabis we use in all of our CBD products. So, none of our CBD products will get you high.

ARE THESE “SHROOMS”? ADAPTOGENIC MUSHROOMS VS. MAGIC MUSHROOMS

Let’s make this as clear as possible. Our CBD mushroom products are not shrooms, in the psychedelic sense. They’re not CBD-infused magic mushrooms, combining magic mushrooms with our CBD wellness products. Our CBD mushrooms do not contain psilocybin, the hallucinogenic compound that people use for recreational purposes.

Rather than shrooms, mushies or magic mushrooms, the mushrooms we use in all of our CBD mushroom products are adaptogenic and/or nootropic mushrooms, used for their wellness benefits. These mushrooms have no intoxicating or hallucinating effects.

HOW ARE CBDFX MUSHROOMS GROWN?

Our mushrooms are all wild harvested in the USA. They are extracted from the sporocarp, or fruiting body, of the fungi. We extract the mushroom content used in our CBD products with a clean water spraying method. This means you’re getting the purest and most potent mushroom extract available, with no residual chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you cannot trip or get high on CBD mushrooms. Our CBD contains less than 0.3% THC, which is not enough THC to become intoxicating. And none of the mushrooms we use in our CBD products contain psilocybin, the hallucinogenic compound that people use for recreational purposes.

The phrase “magic mushrooms” (as well as “shrooms” or “mushies”) is generally used to refer to mushrooms that contain the hallucinogenic compound, psilocybin. None of the mushrooms we use in our CBD mushroom products contain this compound. We may say “shrooms” from time to time as shorthand for “mushrooms,” but we never use magic mushrooms with psilocybin in our products.

Full spectrum CBD refers to the CBD oil that is initially extracted from the hemp plant, containing all of the compounds of the plant, including all cannabinoids (including CBD and less than 0.3% THC), terpenes and flavonoids. Broad spectrum CBD is CBD oil that has been filtered to remove the trace amounts of THC, as well as some of the other compounds. Both types of CBD give the user the Entourage Effect.

The Entourage Effect is the phenomenon whereby the different compounds of the hemp plant don’t merely work in parallel with one another as they interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Instead, CBD and the other compounds actually bolster each other’s effectiveness. So, with full spectrum CBD or broad spectrum CBD, your CBD actually works harder for you than it would on its own.

CBG, or cannabigerol, is a cannabinoid, one of the chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant. Known as the “mother of all cannabinoids,” this wellness-boosting compound is actually the parent cannabinoid from which CBD and other cannabinoids are formed.

Yes, our CBD mushroom products are all 100% vegan and non-GMO.

Both CBD and the mushrooms we use in our CBD mushroom products have a wide variety of wellness benefits. CBD’s beneficial effects stem from its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The mushrooms we use have a variety of benefits, ranging from stress relief and immune boosting to energy and wellness.
